Your Sunday Ritual: Intention Setting

There is so much to be grateful for in the summer. Longer days. Endless sunshine. Patio dates, weekends away on a dock, and picnics in the park. But, as we slip into our bikinis and sip on a cold beverage, we tend to slip away from our goals and intentions. 

With so much going on,  how can we continuously cultivate that feeling of gratitude and appreciation and stay on track with our goals? The answer is simple: intention setting.

Setting an intention gives us a framework to set priorities and align ourselves with the manifestation of the intention we set. It not only raises our emotional energy and awareness, it can also increase our physical energy (also known as action). Setting an intention for the day, week or month ahead empowers us to achieve a positive and encouraging mind-state, which ultimately raises our levels of overall happiness.

Intention setting is more than a tactical goal (ex., I will exercise everyday) and more of an internal operation you set forth, like an internal compass that allows you to steer your life in the right direction. Maybe you don't know exactly what you have to go through, or how to achieve your 'journey' but if you know what direction you want to go, and the compass to lead you, you will be on the right track. 

Right now, do you know what direction you are going? Is the internal NE or SW you want to go? Of course, it is not an actual orientation, but you get the point, right? Are you hypothetically lost in a forest, unsure which way to go? Or do you know the direction you need to go, even though you are not sure what you will have to path to get there? That is an intention, an internal guide so you don't wander aimlessly in the forest. With your intention, it will be easier to overcome what is on your path, because you know what direction to go. 

When we are slipping into pools and lakes we  slip out of are professional and personal goals, this weeks ritual to help you get back on track!


Your Sunday Ritual - Setting an Intention

  1. First, cultivate gratitude. By being grateful for what we have already, your intention will move away from mindset of scarcity and wanting, to one of being open to something positive. Reflect on the summer so far, what are you grateful for? What has happened? What do you feel? Feel free to write it down or just list them in your head. Once you do, breath in and close your eyes. Thinking of what you are grateful for, notice how it feels in your body, where you feel it. Take a few minutes to sit with it.                                                                                                                                                                                              
  2. Once you have done this, think of an intention you want to set. Think of it as an open ended goal. Such as;  be kind for the week; or a new project at work (without the details of what);  connecting with new people, or reconnecting with relationships that are meaningful to you, etc. Personally, I will be setting the intention to flow through my work this week with grace. I have a lot of different balls I’m juggling and find I can get overwhelmed or expect a lot of what I should accomplish. I teach yoga twice a week and promote that and teach corporate yoga, I run her collectives, I am doing digital marketing consulting for companies, and trying to still eat well and practice yoga. By setting an intention to flow through each project with grace, I will be leaving it open to how it will happen.                                                                                                                                                                           
  3. Now that you have your intention, write it down! The process of physically writing it down makes it more powerful.                                                                                                    
  4. Daily Reminder: Each morning when you wake up, take a few moments to repeat the intention in your head. 

Of course, you can do this longer than a week, but for the sake of a sunday ritual, start with this week and see how you feel!
